Highway surfacing and repair
Introduction and system guide

Star Uretech is a leading manufacturer of high performance surfacing and permanent repair systems for roads and highways. Our product range includes the award winning, BBA HAPAS approved high friction (anti-skid) surfacing system, a truly permanent pot-hole repair solution and our innovative cold applied, demarcation system used for bus and cycle lanes, traffic calming and car parks. Unlike rosin ester (hot-melt), epoxy and MMA (Methyl methacrylate) products our range of highway surfacing and repair products incorporate the latest developments in polyurea technology to provide a long lasting, high performance, cost effective, safe alternative with award winning green credentials. Independent tests show that our products have a 70% lower carbon footprint than traditional systems and as a BSEN ISO 9001:2008 quality assured manufacturer we provide only the very best in both service and product quality. Our products include:

Uretech HFS (High Friction Surfacing)
HFS (High friction surfacing) is a coating applied to road surfaces which imparts a high level of skid resistance onto a road surface. Developed over 60 years ago the first applications used an epoxy resin binder and the systems were known as anti-skid surfacing. There were several problems with the epoxy based systems as they were difficult to use and had a very narrow installation window due to their reliance on specific weather conditions. Through-out the 1980s and early 1990s epoxy systems began to be replaced with hot-melt (rosin ester) systems and MMA (Methyl methacrylate) products however over the last 10 years it has become apparent that hot-melt systems have many downsides including their failure rate. Uretech HFS is a polyurea system which is BBA HAPAS approved an environmental innovation award winner and has a proven application lifespan of over ten years.

Uretech RRS (Pothole repair system)
One of the first things that people think of when discussing the UKs roads is potholes. Local Authorities currently pay out more than £30 million each in compensation claims due to poor road maintenance and at current maintenance levels, the average frequency for a road to be resurfaced in England is once every 54 years. Limited budgets have resulted in Local Authorities using cheap, ‘quick-fix’, bitumen based products to fill potholes and these systems usually fail and break up in just a matter of weeks after the repair. Many bitumen based systems now claim to be a permanent repair system however in most repairs this is clearly not the case. Star Uretech’s Uretech RRS is a truly permanent solution that is guaranteed to outlast the surrounding road surface on which it is installed. This makes it a cost-effect, one time repair.

Uretech MTC (Micro-trenching compound)
Micro-trenching is an innovative technique that can be used to deploy communications infrastructure, typically fibre optic cable, in highways and is an alternative to digging up perfectly good road surfaces which are then filled with bitumen based products which result in uneven surfaces and potholes. Under the right circumstances the technique has the potential for low-impact deployment methodology in which fibre optic cable and sometimes conduits are laid into a slot-cut trench less than 20mm wide, and typically between 120-300mm deep, without disrupting or damaging existing infrastructure in the highway. The trench is then reinstated, often making it difficult to even notice that works have taken place. Using Uretech MTC can save considerable time in deployment, as well as using fewer resources, and can have a reduced environmental impact, with less waste removed from trenches or transported to the site for backfill.

Uretech RRB (Bedding compound)
Uretech RRL (Locking compound)
Ironwork repairs and reinstatement is a process of replacing drain covers, manhole covers or other ironwork used on highways. Ironworks are also key areas where surrounding road surfaces fail and produce potholes or dangerous, uneven surfaces. Uretech RRB is a high performance mortar compound used to fill the void around new or damaged ironworks whilst Uretech RRL is a locking compound used to level the surface and prevent any future problems or failures.

Uretech TrackSafe (Demarcation Coating)
Demarcation coatings are systems used to overcoat HFS (High friction surfacing) and produce a finish that is coloured and highly visible to make it stand out from surrounding surfaces. Typically these systems are used to highlight specific zones such as cycle lanes, bus lanes, car parking bays and pedestrianised areas.
